Speeding patterns in Italy

GPS based, Big Data comparative analysis of speeding patterns in 9 biggest Italian cities

Speeding patterns in Italy

Italian driving style is often, and mostly by foreign tourists, referred to as extremely fast-paced, almost aggressive. Unaccustomed tourists often feel intimidated by their frequent lane changing and unhesitant overtaking. Especially infamous are southern cities, particularly Naples and Rome.

The eBook aims to question the popular beliefs that Southerners are intrusive drivers and measure whether they are, at least in terms of speeding, any different from other Italian drivers.

We present the comparative analysis of speeding patterns in 9 biggest Italian cities. The eBook examines GPS traces of more than 600,000 privately-owned vehicles driven uniformly throughout Italy in 2019 and 2020. The analysis compares how speeding behavior differentiates between cities based on:

  • time of the day
  • day of the week
  • road types

Although this analysis was made on Italian drivers, the results are quite general and applicable to most European cities.
